The grant of legal aid is both merits and means tested, and we will prepare the written application for you.
Means testing is more severe in the Magistrates’ Court and for cases committed to the Crown Court for sentence or appeal but if you fail to secure legal aid, we will bear in mind your means when we calculate a private fee quote.
Whilst the means cap in the Crown court is more generous the grant of legal aid can come with an order that you pay the government a contribution. Where this is the case, we will keep an eye on your costs and if we believe that paying privately would be a more cost effective option, we will provide you with a competitive quote so you can make an informed decision.
